The great outdoors holds many adventures and can provide a wide variety of activities. There are many ways people experience the adventure through outdoor sports and outdoor education.
Often adventure education is linked to the incorporation of all five senses within the experiences which can strengthen the opportunities for learning and retaining information. The learning experiences to adventure education programs are structured for a potential increase in human performance and capacity.
Adventure education has many positive outcomes. We can identify adventure education into five positive outcome categories: leadership, self-concept, academic, personality, and interpersonal. Adventure education often employs practical skills that will benefit an individual in areas beyond the activities in an adventure program.
There are three theories in adventure education in which the participant may apply what they learned into future experiences. The first theories are “specific transfer”: The learner applies the habits and skills learned during an experience to a new and similar experience. The second theory is “nonspecific transfer” the learner establishes some common principles acquired through previous experiences and applies them in a new learning situation. The third theory is “metaphoric transfer” the learner applies similar underlying principles to other areas and situations.
Outdoor environments are natural settings for physical activity. In fact, a lot of us may be more likely to be active with being outdoors. Think about the times when you took a walk or a run in your neighborhood, when you walked, hiked, or played games in a park, when you explored a nature trail, or when you spent time gardening or cleaning up your backyard. Those activities probably made you feel good, energized, and even rejuvenated, when you follow the safety roles.
- Follow your program’s policies about inspecting areas to make sure they are safe. Debris, rocks, water, and other hazards should be removed from play areas.
- Inspect equipment you use outdoors to ensure they are in good condition. Also, make sure you know how to use the equipment properly.
- Be aware of weather conditions and be ready to move to a safe area in case of bad weather.
- Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after activities. You should offer fluid breaks every 30 to 45 minutes, or more frequently during warmer weather.
- Follow your program requirements about sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Make sure you dressed appropriately for the weather and activities.
- Have well-stocked first-aid kits available at all times and follow your program’s policies about using them.
Outdoor activity refers to recreation engaged outside, most commonly in natural settings. The activities themselves such as fishing, hunting, and horseback ridding — characteristically determine where they are practiced.

They are pursued variously for enjoyment, exercise, challenge, camaraderie, spiritual renewal, and an opportunity to partake in nature. Though the activities are inherently lean-to sports they nonetheless do not all demand that a participant must be an athlete or active, and competition generally is less stressed than in individual or team sports organized into opposing squads in pursuit of a trophy or championship. When the activity involves exceptional excitement, physical challenge, or risk, it is sometimes referred to as “adventure recreation” or “adventure training”, rather than an extreme sport.
Other traditional examples of outdoor recreational activities include:
hiking, camping, cycling, canoeing, caving, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, running, sailing, skiing, skydiving, and surfing. As new pursuits, often hybrids of prior ones, emerge, they gain their own identities, such as canyoning.

When you choose your outdoor gear, it’s important to read and research important information about it. For example, learn the safety rules, and what kind of equipment you need to get. Take fishing for example. Certain types of fish require certain types of fishing rods and lines which is why it’s important to do research.
There are many places that specialize in what equipment you need to match an interesting hobby. There are also many classes that you can attend that specialize in certain hobbies, some of these classes are even online. You can also watch videos and read certain articles.
